General Information

Vacuum former

Formstudy laboratory, Zuid-Serre, Faculty of Architecture, Julianalaan 134, Delft (building #8)

Key words:

acrylic, vacuum form

Main application:

The vacuum former can be used to thermoform thin sheets of plastic over a form (the mold). The sheets are heated up until they are soft. Next, the soft sheet is moved over a platen onto which the mold is fixed. The platen with the mold move up into the sheet and vacuum draws the sheet tight around the mold. Once the sheet cools the vacuum is turned off, the platen is lowered and the sheet can be removed from the machine.

Instrument specification

Max specimen size:
Width 550 mm
Depth 550 mm
Height 200 mm

Both transparant and colored sheets can be used (acrylic, polystiren) to vacuum form. For the mold itself a wide range of materials (wood, clay, metals, polymers, cardboard etc) are suitable.
