References:

This setup was used in the developement of the electret microphone. The electret is basically an insulating material with 'frozen-in' polarization, resulting in a permanently electrified material - the electrostatic analogue of a permanent magnet. This permanent 'frozen-in' surface charge, or homocharge, can be exploited in many ways, the most widely used device being the electret microphone.
